Dying Eggs 101

Before our spring break, I was in one of the first grade classrooms when a little boy brought his journal to me to read. While it was a great writing sample and I was instantly jealous because I don't remember being able to write that much when I was in first grade, I was more intrigued by the words that had been erased.

The assignment was to write about how you dye eggs. This student wanted to be sure that the eggs had, in fact, died first. Probably not a bad plan.

The teacher this student has is an excellent teacher despite the fact she lacks a sense of humor and had Mr. Kill the Eggs make the appropriate corrections.

I loved the corrections! In my book, he gets extra points for creativity.

That's some awesome writing for 1st grade!! I love little kid writing.

Was the re-do for writing about killing? LOL

Vodka Mom - I live to hang out with the kids. They are far funnier than we are.

Jane - Stuff like this is the reason I travel around the school with my camera. I don't want to miss anything!

only a movie - Now that you mention it, she was probably worried about that homicide rule.

Love it- and you're right she needs a sense of humor- I'm glad my daughter's teacher (from Catholic school mind you) didn't make her re-write an entry about Santa and the Devil...cracked me up - gotta dig it up.

My heavens! Redo? I would be happy that they wrote a few sentences. This is more writing than I can even get out of some of my high school students!!! So much red ink!

I agree - this one's for the memoirs. :-) I love reading what kids write.

Mrs. K - Seriously, this teacher could probably teach a rock to read. She is one of my most requested teachers. She just really doesn't have a sense of humor. I think she was born without it.

Hit40 - I know, I know. I alway cringe when I see red ink. Some of this red ink was written by a student. They peer check each other's work.

Leslie Hanna - Thanks! I get a kick out of the kiddos, too.

Too many bloody corrections
leave the kid alone already............
writing comes first
perfection later
or maybe never

give the teacher a big hug and tell her to chill........
(said by one very ancient ex-teacher......)

The dreaded red pen - kills creativity every time. (reformed copy editor :-)

The teacher probably turns her sense of humor off at school.

2nd grade writing is better.

I am pro 2nd grade. I had super teacher who did lots of reading and writing.

I had crying teacher in 1st grade who said at the end of the year that she would never teach 1st grade again and she ren back to kindrgarten. She taught 1st grade last year and 2nd grade this year.(I talked to her on myspace. Next year, she is going where she belongs- pre-k.

This ledy always was like this- my mom went to school with her.

I will never teach 1st grade. Not anything lower than 2nd grade.

What a creative kid!

thank God for teachers like you. I had several in my life that were so bitter and angry and went out of their way to stifle their students creativity and I think it is incredibly sad. I envy your students.

ahhh...creativity - maybe when he's older, and a poet, he will write, "Words Erased" and he will win the Pulitzer prize :-)

ACCCKKKKTTT! That red pen just brought back some HIDEOUS memories!!

I was in kindergarten, and I was SAILING through it (I was GOOD!) and then the dreaded day came when I thought a cucumber was a banana and I colored it yellow. The red pen circled it, marked it wrong and told me to REDO in large capital letters.

I was sure I had flunked kindergarten and was first devestated and then plotted how to start a new life with a new identity. Then the very sweet Nun who was the principal (not unlike yourself, only holy and a good person) told me that it was allowed to make mistakes!!

So then I demanded to know why they used a red pen - because it was SCARY TO KIDS. She gave me a "good effort sticker" and then everything was okay.

You need to go give that kid a good effort sticker pronto! before he goes and gets a fake ID!

I just might try his method if I have have grandkids! Sounds much more fun

That's fabulous - I think she should have let him stick with the original!

Elizabeth - I'm going to go find that teacher tomorrow and banish her red pens. :)

EudeaMamia - I am fascinated with this kids creativity. He is quiet but hilarious.

Jason - I love going into the PK and Kindergarten rooms and getting them all stirred up and then leaving them with the teacher. It is how we have fun every day. But if I were to go back to the classroom, stick me with the kids who could get my twisted sense of humor. It is no fun when they don't laugh.

Kristina - He is creative! And funny! Maybe he'll have a blog one day.

bernthis - That was the nicest compliment. Really.

Kulio - That is an awesome idea! We could go ahead and write this story and have it made into a Lifetime movie. Excellent!

Michel - The kid is getting a Good Effort sticker first thing in the morning! Yes, ma'am!

dzzblnd - Let me know how it works for you.

anymommy - You are right! The original was far better!

It reminds me of your strike throughs!

Happy Easter!

I'm a little afraid of a household where kids learn you need a hammer and a knife to dye eggs...but the hair dryer thing is really smart thinking lol...and they get cooked at the same time! Happy Easter my friend!

I giggled over the whole thing and then became depressed that this child has better handwriting than both of my sons. Combined.

They are 25 and 14.

Beth said...

Comedy Goddess - I love the strike throughs so much that I wrote the date down to remember the anniversary of me learning to do strike through. It seriously thrills me!

nikkicrumpet - I'm not sure what it says about me but I didn't even think about that. Maybe I should worry.

Jan - My husband and oldest son have the handwriting of a doctor. Unfortunately, they don't have the bank account to go along with it. I feel your pain.

That kid is a budding comedy writer or serial egg killer...however, his humor is FANTASTIC! I agree...the original has spunk!

Thank you so much for hanging at my bloggy! (especially since my hostess skills have been sorely lacking due to my stupid laptop issues...I am actually typing this via my parent's computer that I have hijacked for the next 20 minutes! lol!)

Thanks for the laugh, this is too cute, save this to show his wife someday!
BTW, we're drowning again in Atlanta. I don't think we have a drought after the last few weeks!

I definitely think the original is the best! He could do the Princess Bride monologue with the eggs.."My name is Some Firstgrader....Prepare to die.."
