Broken

broken heart As I drove home from school thoughts of you were rolling through my head.

How is it that you can be only 5 years old and yet so indifferent about school?

You show no fear.  No remorse.  You even say you don’t want to learn.

Still, I see a lost look in your eyes.  A look of despair.

And like a sucker punch to the gut, I gasped for breath.  Suddenly, I knew what to do.

No more reactions.  No more consequences.  Only encouragement and praise.  And time to heal.

We’ll believe in you while you don’t.  We’ll love you since you don’t.  We’ll build you back up to the little girl you were meant to be.  Even when you behave like you don’t deserve it.

Because you do.

That's so sad. I guess all we can do is be supportive. I hope it gets better!

Very good. I'm sure that's exactly what she needs! Let school become the place where someone believes in her (since home most likely isn't). Poor kid. Or lucky... since she has a principal with some wisdom.

As Christine said, that poor child. And lucky - because she has you.

Oh, I know this child very very well. If you love the kid no matter what, sometimes you can get in.

Awww, anyone who's been in education knows that feeling. I was a teacher for not even a full year before we had to move, and I had two I felt the same way about. Beautifully written.

I have an award for you over at my place if you're interested.

What a blessing you are! This brought tears to my eyes. I am so thankful that you "see" and are able to make a difference. Thank you for making a difference. XXOO

Isn't it sad that there are world weary 5 year olds? Thank you for recognizing and help this lost one.

This post brought tears to my eyes. The little girl is fortunate to have you in her life.

And only five... so sad. I'm glad she has you Beth.

I've got a 15 year old boy in my class who needed someone to turn him around the minute he hit school. Let's hope for him this year too.

Poor sweetie. A little love can work big miracles!

So sad. And sadly, not uncommon.

Boy does this one ring true, Beth. Sometimes (dare I say, MOST times), the kids who are the least lovable need our love the most. You're right, it's terrifying when you see such apathy and hopelessness in a five-year-old.

Keep fighting the good fight.

I so wish I had a teacher like you when I was small. I appreciate your insight and your ability to see the true hurts.

I wish so many of us would take on a child like this with this same attitude. We need to step back as you do and reevalutate what her needs really are

The world needs more people with a heart like yours. Really it does.

I think that if I was in desperate need of someone to give me a hand, that you would be on the list of the first people that I might ask for help! (Don't worry, I will not knock on your door in the middle of the night with my sleeping bag!) haha

This was a compliment, by the way!

Love NEVER fails. You totally have the right plan, sounds like to me!

I can just hear the thinking: "Because that's what we do, we give you the belief in your abilities to learn, to grow, to take succesful steps while you're with us."

Congratulations on the OMG post of the day.

It's sad when someone that age has had nobody at home show love and caring....

That is so sad! School is suppose to be a safe and happy place!

Good luck! I'm really glad that there are people like you who are educators.

That's sadly familiar. My six year old was like that last year. He still says he hates school now, but I think he's just saying it now for the sake of it. I can tell he's enjoying himself now.

that is sad - and my son was exactly and i mean EXACTLY the same way and i am glad to report that 2 years later and it is a total 180 - hang in there mommy

God job! Hard times, but you are doing the right thing!! Sometimes my Weston is a challenge... this is a good reminder, I dont know where we went wrong.

Awwww in a sort of distant, can't-quite-remember sort of way I can relate.

That's one of the hardest parts about teaching - dealing with indifference and apathy in such little kiddos. I think you are right - go with praise and maybe a miracle will happen for both of you!
