Should I tell them?

Mr. Funny gets tons of mail from a lot of different universities.  He has worked hard in school and having many options is his reward and my stressor because how far away from home do you want my boy?IMG_6131

As we have been perusing the applications, I’ve noticed they want lots of money for the application fees recommendations from former teachers, current teachers, and his guidance counselor.  They ask nothing about my opinion of my son’s abilities.

Therefore, I do not feel it is my responsibility to let them know that Mr. Funny may need some special assistance in some areas.  For instance, he can’t figure out when to empty the trash.

He has yet to figure out how and where to put away his clothes.

Discussing the state of affairs at his desk makes me feel like going into a blackout rage a little crazy.

IMG_6133Soon enough, Mr. Funny and all his messes won’t be my problem.  I sincerely hope that there are some remediation courses in the home department as I have apparently failed to teach him in this area.

These universities have no idea what they might be getting themselves into.  For crying out loud, we occasionally have to remind him to flush the toilet.  Probably, they should leave him alone.

But that’s what they’ll get for not asking for my opinion.

i must say, these may help qualify him as i seem to remember a dorm room in much need of the same TLC in my past. getting married cured me of that one..lol.

Have to say I am so happy for your boy and his bright future.

He'll learn to flush eventually...

Brian is correct; the only way that boy will change will be when his wife/girlfriend puts her foot down. This was hilarous.

It may all not matter to the school, but you may get some grief from his room mates(s)!

Too funny! I used to say that colleges should ask us mothers to send pictures of our sons/daughters bedrooms and bathrooms as they really are. And then they can match them up with other kids that are similar.

My boyfriend is a self proclaimed slob. He has the decency to clean every room before I come over. Gotta love that!

HAHA! Hilarious! I don't think you should attempt to visit his dorm room. Just let him come home.

it's for the best.

:-) Looks familiar.

He still has a cool future ahead of him... does he know what he wants to study?

xxoo

I did not see a problem there? What is your complaint? hehehehe!

So let me get this straight. When my son is about to graduate from High School, he will STILL not have figured out how to do these things?

HAVE MERCY!

Funny, funny...same lovely sights and sounds here...Apparently they do not let them check out for breaks or vacations until the room is inspected. I pity the guy in charge of inspections. Wonder what in the world he ever did to anybody to deserve that job????

Finally! An honest mom :) If the universities DID ask the parents.. the only ones who were honest about their kids would get in the big schools. At least you won't tell him he's perfect in every way.

GREAT post..

The parts you cross out are STILL my favorite part about your posts

Brian - I'm already worried for his future girlfriend/wife.

Pseudo - Will he really learn to flush? For that, I am truly excited!

lakeviewer - I probably need to prepare my apologies for his future wife.

Nancy - He already gets grief from his brother. It has had NO EFFECT on him.

smiles4u - I have the pictures ready to send!

Comedy Goddess - Awwww. You have a sweet boyfriend.

Michel - Good point. I'll save myself from the disappointment.

only a movie - I'd say it was a boy thing - but I have one son who does better (slightly so). At this point, he wants to study history, political science and international relations. He is a news freak!

otin - I KNEW you wouldn't!

Chief - Sorry to disappoint. Go fix yourself a drink.

Southern Drawl - So someone will have to check out his room before he can go home?! Great. He'll never make it home again.

dizzblnd - He IS perfect. Except for the room thing. And his car. And his attitude. Other than those things... perfect!

Strange things happen when boys go off to college. Big Buddha Boy is suddenly able to do laundry, to dress in clean(ish) clothes, to think about a double major AND wants to run for student council. Sometimes I wonder if I should that these changes in personality portend some terrible cognitive affliction.....But mostly I think he may be growing up. We will see what his grades are like soon enough.

Are you sure your son isn't somehow related to my sister? I just blogged about all the household things she has never done...

Oh, I remember boy's dorm rooms in college... it only gets worse.

They grow up very fast when they leave the nest, but it's gonna be lonesome for everyone.

Until I visited my daughter's room at college I thought it would look pretty much like her room had been her entire life before college. It was a surprise to see boxes with labels, everything neat and in order, this clearly could not be my daughter's room! And she has been like that ever since then. She had a roommate who was not as neat as she was and my daughter wanted to know where her stuff was. To this day her house is in order. Her things are neat but her children are like she was growing up. It goes round and round.

OMG. is your son related to my daughter? I mean really? Although I have to admit, her room is worse... way worse. I feel sorry for whoever is going to be her roommate next year.

Maybe you should write a letter on your school letterhead and sign it as principal...oh and add the pictures to.

His poor,poor future wife.

It has to be a college thing...I dare not visit my son without ample warning...even then, I would never stay at his apartment...

I love my son...

So are you saying that I shouldn't expect my 6 yr old to learn how to consistently flush the toilet any time soon?

Greeeeeat!

Brian is right! His cleanliness will allow him to fit right in with the other boys. If he was tidy, then you might want to worry. The other "dirty" boys might freak him out.

My college liked to rotate years that the girls and boys had different dorms. The girls would pimp it up with new paint. The boys would kinda destroy it the next year.

Kulio said...

Going through the same thing here! How will he survive????

http://howtobecomeacatladywithoutthecats.blogspot.com said...

My son refused to let me even see his college applications, let alone offer any suggestions for them. It's a pity the people in charge of the dorms won't be getting this important information... personally, I think they just bulldoze the dorms at the end of each year... much easier than actually cleaning them out.

Darling Daughter, who shares an apartment with Oldest Son, has been in Las Vegas visiting friends for a month. She comes home this week, and when I spoke with Oldest Son yesterday, I asked him what he was doing.

"Cleaning the house before DD gets home."

"Yeah, she'll go ballistic if she comes home and finds the place a wreck."

"Well, it's just the living room, kitchen, my bedroom and the bathroom."

"Oldest Son - that's 4/5 of your apartment!"

So, it doesn't get any better, no.

I think you just gave me a look into my crystal ball! HA! ; )

I grew up with three older brothers and a mother who desperately tried to teach them these things. In the end, it's up to their wife...hee hee!

Okay, so he's a perfectly normal teenage boy. Problem? Not as long as the tuition check is on time.

Tell him to go with the senders of that top letter. Harvard, Schmarvard. Go to Georgia, become a Rhodes scholar and then you can go to Oxford or the real Cambridge for a few semesters. Beats the heck out of Cambridge, Mass.

Oh, and geniuses are to busy geniusing to mess around with laundry.

moll - My oldest son is in college and he is so mature now! When did that happen?!

Crazy Charm - My sister sounds like your sister. Messy!

Creepy - I've never been in a boy's dorm room. I've been sheltered!

Secretia Teller - I think I'm going to rack up some frequent flier miles when he moves...

TechnoBabe - My oldest step-daughter was the same way - suddenly neat. I still won't hold my breath for the boy.

rxBambi - Ha! They'll probably meet and live happily ever after in their own pig sty.

sun lover - I already feel sorry for his future wife, too.

Mango Girl - I totally understand. I love my son, too. I don't plan to stay with him.

Candice - Sorry to disappoint.

Hit 40 - I hadn't thought about him fitting in. Just how nasty ARE boy's dorm rooms?!

Kulio - Maybe I should randomly send him text messages to take out the trash and change the sheets.

CatLadyLarew - What is it about the kids letting their parents read their applications?

Jan - I can hear the same conversation between my two boys. At least one is somewhat neat.

Elaine - I'm already working on my apologies to his future wife.

Chris - You are right about the tuition! We will have FOUR kids in college next fall. Ack!

Dana - True. There are advantages to being broke.

carma - It is possible. I was given a pain killer.

bernthis - Uh oh. I have visions of Animal House.

A Free Man - I don't think he is interested in Harvard. Not really. We will probably go with the one with the best scholarship. :) And I should probably start worrying about the laundry about now, eh?

Wow - you have a lot of blog readers - 36 comments!! Holy Macaroni!!

That is hilarious about your son's garbage cans...that would drive me nuts. I'm forever emptying garbage cans in my house.

Yep, the schools should have asked you. LOL!!

Glad to hear you have the big girl panties back on and are ready to run. I think as we get closer, we should discuss our speed etc and maybe make an interval plan for the race....that will hopefully prevent both of our premature deaths before reaching the 13.1 mark!!
